چکیده

We derive radial profiles of the surface-mass-density for 19 spiral galaxies directly from their high-resolution rotation curves. Using the corresponding luminosity profiles, we obtain the radial distribution of the mass-to-luminosity ratios (M/L) from the inner bulge (∼ a few 100 pc) to the outer disk (≥ 2−10 kpc) for 11 galaxies (with inclination < 70 in order to reduce the influence of the interstellar extinction. The M/Ls in the bulges of two galaxies with sufficient resolution, NGC 4527 and NGC 6946, are found to increase steeply toward the center at radii ∼ 100−500 pc at rates of 15±3 and 7±2 times per kpc, respectively. Some other galaxies with fairly high resolution also show signs of an increase toward the center. Such an increase may indicate the existence of a new component, a “massive dark core”, which may be an object linking the bulge and a central black hole. Based on radial variations of the M/L, we further discuss the variation of the dark-mass fraction in spiral galaxies. Distribution of Dark Matter in Bulge, Disk and Halo inferred from High-accuracy Rotation Curves

High-accuracy rotation curves of spiral galaxies show a steep rise in the central few hundred pc region, indicating high concentration of mass toward the center. Using the rotation curves, we idrectly calculate radial distributions of the surface-mass density (SMD), and obtain radial profiles of the mass-to-luminosity ratio (M/L). The M/L ratio is found to vary significantly not only in the mas...

We present high-accuracy rotation curves, which show a steep nuclear rise and high-velocity central rotation, followed by a broad maximum in the disk and flat part. We use the rotation curves to directly calculate the radial distribution of surface mass density, and obtain radial variations of the mass-to-luminosity ratio (M/L). The M/L ratio and, therefore, the dark mass fraction (DMF) is not ...

Dark-Matter Distribution inferred from High-accuracy Rotation Curves

Abstract. Using high-accuracy rotation curves of spiral galaxies, we derive distributions of the surface mass density. Comparing with the luminosity profiles, we show that the dark mass in disk and bulge distributions follows those of luminous (stellar) mass, while luminous mass in halos does not follow dark mass. The darkmass fraction (DMF) increases with the radius in the disk, and rapidly to...

A Systematic Search for Gravitationally-Lensed Arcs in the Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 Archive

We present the results of a systematic search for gravitationally-lensed arcs in clusters of galaxies located in the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 data archive. By carefully examining the images of 128 clusters we have located 12 candidate radial arcs and 104 tangential arcs, each of whose length to width ratio exceeds 7. In addition, 24 other radial arc candidates we...

THE BULGE-HALO CONNECTION IN GALAXIES: A PHYSICAL INTERPRETATION OF THE Vc −σ0 RELATION STÉPHANE COURTEAU, MICHAEL MCDONALD, LAWRENCE M. WIDROW

We explore the dependence of the ratio of a galaxy’s circular velocity, Vc, to its central velocity dispersion, σ0, on morphology, or equivalently light concentration, for rotationally and pressure supported galaxies. Such a dependence is expected if light traces the mass. Over the full range of galaxy types, masses and brightnesses, and assuming that the gas velocity traces the circular veloci...
